FATE stands for: Future Academy on Tour in Europe
In June 2020 we were informed that our application for the FATE project, which we submitted to the EU under the Creative Europe programme, has been awarded.
ZID Theater is one of five Dutch organisations that, as main applicant, has received European subsidy from Creative Europe in the context of European Collaboration Projects (small-scale, max €200,000 contribution). We are extremely proud of this because the success rate for this subsidy scheme was barely 30%. A total of 314 projects were submitted. The subsidy has been received for a period of 2.5 years and the project started in September 2020.
With FATE – Future Academy on Tour in Europe – we want to ensure that creative young people with a refugee or migrant background can participate equally in the professional arts and cultural sector, both on stage, behind the scenes and within organisations.
Connecting “new players” and the cultural sector
FATE – Future Academy on Tour in Europe – aims to create a connection between new migrants, refugees and EU citizens through artistic training, inclusion and increasing employment in the cultural sector.
The aim is to generate interest in the employability of talented/professional creative migrants and refugees and to ensure that these “new players”, also known as “urban talents”, have equal job market opportunities in the cultural sector, compared to native European artists and creative professionals. ZID focuses mainly on the Netherlands and takes a pioneering role in this field.
Goals of the project
Developing, testing and documenting a training method for “new players” – i.e. professional performing artists and producers with a migrant and refugee background who wish to pursue a professional career in the arts in Europe.
Creative professionals with a migrant and refugee background have limited opportunities to find work in their professional field in new countries. The partners believe that it’s these people’s “destiny” to stay in Europe and that they should be facilitated to participate in a full and sustainable way in the cultural life of their city, region, country and continent.
International partners from Spain, Italy, Germany and Serbia
In this project, ZID cooperates with the international partners Atalya Teatro (Spain), University of Torino (Italy); Studio 7 (Germany) and DAH Teater (Serbia).
ZID has already worked with all these partners in the past. The project aims to establish a connection between newcomers, migrants and refugees, and the art and culture sector, professional art schools and organisations and institutions. The project will operate nationally in the four partner countries as well as at a European level.
Why
With FATE we want to ensure that creative young people with a refugee or migrant background can participate equally in the professional art and culture sector, both on stage, behind the scenes and within organisations. Various studies have shown that participation of these young people in the professional art and culture sector in Europe is still very limited.
Because the EU recognises the urgency of this problem, we can start this project. We hope that all partners will find the necessary support from authorities and partners in their own country. With this project we endorse our mission to make art and culture accessible for everyone, both locally and internationally.
