Learning together in the Neighbourhood
‘Learning together in the Neighbourhood’ is an initiative that arose from the teacher shortage to reduce the pressure on staff. The idea of the project: sending children on their way in the neighbourhood where they are taught about various topics by their adult neighbours. The programme focuses on broad talent development with attention to music, culture, nature and movement (supplemented with science and technology). The pilot has entered its third year and has already achieved many great results.
Like so many schools in the country, the educational institutions in the Nieuw-West district of Amsterdam are also struggling with a large teacher shortage. Three primary schools in Nieuw-West therefore work together with 5 partners and organizations from the district. Every Thursday morning, ‘replacement lessons’ are provided by the various district partners from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. ZID Theater is one of these neighbourhood partners.
In short, the students are engaged in inquiry-based learning. This means that they go to organizations in the neighborhood that can teach them something or bring the material from the lesson at school to life in practice. It leads to beautiful and valuable learning situations for the children.
